Biometrics Facial Recognition: Is It The Most Reliable?

A biometric facial recognition device incorporates technology that identifies individuals by scanning their facial features and matches the information with what is stored in its database. It is much more expensive than a simple fingerprint scanner and is mostly used by military and governmental organizations. However, its credibility as well as its reliability has come under question on several occasions primarily because of the fact that facial features can be molded quite easily in order to pass the scanning process. A biometrics facial recognition appliance is generally used in conjunction with a variety of other scanners such as retina and voice print analysis in order to increase its reliability.

Biometric face recognition primarily relies on the identification of facial contours that exist upon individuals faces. Normally each individuals face structure is inherently different from each other. This is quite similar to a hand geometry scanner that identifies the lines and ridges on one’s hand in order to check whether the person is authorized to entire particular premises or a locked safe. However, various methods have evolved over the decades which can create a mask of a particular set of features. This mask can be worn on the face of the user trying to gain entry. The mask’s structure duplicates the contours, ridges and lines required for successful authorization.

On the other hand, biometric recognition devices based on fingerprint, retinal and voice print analysis scanning are much more reliable because these features or traits cannot really be duplicated. In fact voice scanning devices can also detect stress or duress within one’s specific vocal patterns. This allows the device to detect conditions under which a person might be forced to use his or her voice to allow unauthorized users to gain access to a safe or a particular room or area. Furthermore, a retinal scanner identifies an individual’s retina as designated by his or her pupil. Retinal traits are inherently different in every human being and it is extremely difficult to fool a retinal scanner.

That is why a biometric facial recognition device is not solely used as a protective measure against break-ins and unauthorized entry attempts. Such a device can be duped if an individual creates a mold featuring the correct facial pattern. A retinal as well as voice print analysis scan is also incorporated within such a system. In fact a fingerprint scanner is far more reliable since fingerprints of each individual are completely different.
